Gastric Lap Band Surgery is becoming increasingly popular nowadays. This surgery is a weight loss surgery and is a great choice for the obese patients with high BMI rates. This Surgery has become a lot more popular as it has many advantages over the traditional bypass surgery.

Gastric Lap Band Surgery is also referred to as lap banding or lap band surgery. An adjustable silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach and people see considerate weight loss just by restricting the intake of food. The band around the stomach creates a small pouch that can hold approximately 50 ml – 1000 ml. thus, the digestive system functions exactly as before, with the only exception that the amount of food you consume before you feel full is decreased considerably.

Patients prefer to go for this surgery, as it requires a very short stay in the hospital followed by a rapid recovery. In some reported cases, some people can even wake up and walk around within an hour of their operation. Another advantage of this surgery is that you can be operated on in the morning and return home the same day in the evening or late night.

Gastric Lap Band Surgery is completely reversible because this surgery does not involve any stapling or cutting of the stomach as it is often done in other surgeries. The surgery being reversible is of great significance to some patients. For instance, if a woman undergoes this surgery and she is planning to expand her family, then in such cases, this band can be taken during the pregnancy period. Similarly, if you are not satisfied with its results, you can reverse the procedure and opt for other forms of weight loss programs.

Advantages of the Gastric Lap Band Surgery:

1 This surgery does not involve cutting or stapling of the stomach.

2 It can be adjusted according to the needs of the patient without any operation to adjust the stomach.

3 It is completely reversible.

4 It includes a short hospital stay.

Patients after undergoing the Gastric Lap Band Surgery are advised to consume 60-70 grams of proteins daily in order to avoid protein deficiency. Special Care should also be taken with general eating after the surgery. People are advised to take small bites and eat slowly.

People are also advised to consider their new stomach now as a smaller baby stomach.

Experts advise to patients to drink protein shakes and must learn new skills of eating, similarly to that of a newborn baby. New foods can then be added slowly and consistently to the diet to ensure a smooth transition.

Lap Band surgery can be an effective choice for those who are clinically obese. Diet and exercise are always a better alternative to weight loss surgery, but if these do not work or if you have tremendous amounts of weight to lose, you may need some extra help. Before you sign up at a Lap Band Toronto surgery center, make sure you completely understand the benefits and risks of the procedure.

Benefits of LapBand Surgery

The LapBand procedure carries many benefits over gastric bypass weight loss surgery. One of the main benefits is that the Lap Band itself is adjustable. This means the size of the opening can be changed to meet a patient’s changing nutritional needs. This also allows the doctor monitoring a patient’s weight loss to make changes if the patient is losing weight too slowly or too quickly. Pregnancy is another time when an adjustment may be needed, and this is easy with the Lap Band.

Because the Lap Band surgery does not actually change the shape of the digestive tract, it can be reversed. If necessary, the band can be removed. However, it is designed to safely remain inside the patient’s body for life. In most patients, the stomach will return to its normal size and shape after the band has been removed.

This procedure is the least invasive weight loss surgery currently available. It is a laparoscopic procedure, which means it does not require extensive incisions. This leaves less scarring, causes less pain, and patients deal with shorter recovery times and hospital stays than they would with other weight loss surgery options.

Finally, Lap Band surgery does not cause “dumping syndrome.” This is a common occurrence with bypass operations. It refers to an intolerance of carbs and sugars. When these foods are eaten, the patient will become nauseous, vomit, and experience cramping, dizziness, or overall weakness. This occurs because the undigested sugars hit the lower part of the intestines too quickly for the body to handle them.

Potential Risks of Lap Band Surgery

Like any medical procedure, there are some risks associated with the LapBand procedure. These are small, particularly when compared to the risks associated with more invasive weight loss surgeries, but you should be aware of them before having the procedure done.

One risk you face any time you have a surgical procedure done is the risk of blood clots or an allergic reaction to the anesthetic. Be sure that you discuss this with your doctor before having the procedure done. If you have had a reaction to anesthetic in the past, you may not be able to have the procedure.

The band itself may cause problems for some patients. A patient’s body may reject the LapBand and attack it like a foreign object. This is rare, but can cause serious complications. Also, sometimes the band can slip. This can cause it to erode the stomach. It can also cut off the blood supply to the stomach. If the band slips, another surgery must be performed to put it back in place.

If a patient does not follow the dietary guidelines given after the procedure, the pouch created by the band may stretch. Also, the wrong foods can cause vomiting or nausea. A healthy diet is necessary, even after the surgery, in order to guarantee weight loss. Patients who cannot commit to this diet should not undergo the procedure. The surgery is simply a tool to make the diet easier to follow.

While Lap Band surgery does carry some slight risks, it is considered a fairly safe weight loss surgery. Patients who have tried other ways to lose weight and failed should consider the LapBand system as a safe and effective alternative to obesity.

Lap Band, or Laparoscopic obesity surgery is a procedure that is designed to help morbidly obese individuals lose weight and gain confidence, renewed health, and longevity. This surgery is not for everyone, however, and intensive physical and psychological tests are administered to anyone who is considering this procedure in order to determine whether or not they qualify. General qualifications include: being at least eighteen years of age, seventy-five or more above your ideal weight, not suffering from any disease or condition that lead or contributed to your obesity, willingness to make significant lifestyle changes, and other qualifying factors as determined by your health care professional.

What Does The Lap Band Surgery Process Consist Of?

The purpose of this operation is to limit food intake by creating a small pouch in the upper part of the patient’s stomach. This is achieved via the introduction of a gastric banding, placed inside of the stomach, which contains a balloon that is adjustable and increases the feeling of fullness. This surgery lasts between thirty minutes to an hour, and results in a short hospital stay. Unlike many other weight loss surgical procedures, there is no stomach stapling involved in Lap Band surgery.

After your surgery, you will be required to follow a strict diet, which at first will mean clear liquids only. It is important for LapBand surgery patients to adhere to the nutritional and dietary guidelines set forth by their healthcare providers in order to achieve success and prevent surgical complications. The band reduces stomach capacity, increasing the amount of time it takes for food to be digested, meaning that small meals should be sufficient to achieve the feeling of fullness.

Most patients can expect to lose significant amounts of weight, on average about ten pounds a month, equating to one hundred pounds within the first year. You should keep in mind, however, that it is important to lose weight gradually, and that everyone will do so at a different rate. Lap bands will not interfere with exercise, and patients are encouraged to adopt a fitness regimen before their surgery and to resume it approximately a month afterwards.

As with any surgical procedure, there are certain risks that should be considered, which is why it is so important to review your options and research the procedure carefully before making a decision. Many people have achieved incredible results with this procedure, but only your health care provider can determine whether or not it is the correct option for you.

The Advantages of LapBand Surgery

Are you obese? If so, you may be concerned with your health. Obesity can lead to other health complications, including the early onset of death. For that reason, you may be ready to make the change. If so, you may turn to the internet to research your options. In just a few minutes, you will find the LapBand surgery.

The LapBand surgery is a popular procedure that has been performed in the United States since 2001. Although many Americans opt for this procedure and see success, you may be looking for more proof. What is it that makes the LapBand system better than other gastric bypass surgeries?

1 – The LapBand System is Adjustable

Unlike many other forms of bariatric surgery, the LapBand is adjustable. This is very important for tailoring to patient needs. In fact, adjustments are common.

So, what does this mean for you? It means that you and your doctor will work together to decide on the appropriate measurements. This will give you the best chance of weight loss success. With that said, adjustments can be made at anytime. Are you not losing enough weight? Have you lost too much? If so, your band can easily be adjusted to fit your needs.

If that wasn’t enough, the LapBand system can be adjusted without surgery. Adjustment is performed with the use of saline and a thin needle. In most cases, adjustments are included in the overall cost of LapBand surgery.

2 – The LapBand System is Safe

According to the official website for the LapBand procedure, it is the safest obesity surgery currently available in the United States. It has the lowest mortality rate, as well as the lowest complication rate. This, alone, may give you comfort and peace of mind.

As for why the LapBand is the safest surgery option for those suffering from obesity, it involves the procedure. With the LapBand, there is so stomach pouch cutting and stapling. This reduces the risk of complications, including infection and scarring. Instead, an adjustable gastric band, known as the LapBand, is used to reduce stomach size.

While the LapBand procedure is considered safe and effective, further reduce the risk of complications by opting for a Board Certified Surgeon and by following all doctor recommendations.

3 – The LapBand System is Reversible

As previously stated, the LapBand system is adjustable. Not only that, but it is removable. Those suffering from obesity, often find it hard to maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine. With time, knowledge, and a LapBand procedure, weight loss is not only achievable, but it can turn into positive lifestyle change. In a few as five years or more, you may no longer need the band to help your maintain a healthy weight. In that event, it can be removed and your stomach will return to normal.

The LapBand system is a successful and proven way to lose weight. With that said, not everyone is the perfect match. Following surgery, if serious complications arise, the band may be removed. In this instance, the stomach and body return to normal.

4 – The LapBand System is Convenient

Of course, no surgical procedure is truly convenient, but you will be pleased with the LapBand surgery. Since an adjustable gastric banding, known as the LapBand, is positioned around the stomach pouch, recovery time is short. You would spend more time in the hospital with a traditional gastric bypass surgery.

Since the recovery time is short, minor disruptions will interfere with your lifestyle. You will need to take a few days off from work. If your job duties include heavy lifting, first speak with your LapBand surgeon. Generally speaking, you will find yourself back at work and performing your day-to-day tasks in no time at all.

So, there you have it. Above four great reasons why the LapBand surgery is the best weight loss surgery available in the United States were highlighted. So, what are you waiting for? Speak to your primary care physician or contact a LapBand surgeon to see if you are eligible for this safe and potentially lifesaving procedure.

If you are considering weight loss surgery or lapband surgery, make sure you get the facts first. With the rise in obesity, many are seeking effective methods to lose weight through surgical procedures. Many view lapband surgery as the “quick fix” to their weight problems but don’t assess how it will impact their life after surgery. In this article, we will go through what you can expect after lapband surgery related to both diet, exercise, and the healing process.

If you are considering weight loss surgery you must consider that you will need to modify your lifestyle after surgery. If you don’t, your surgery will be for not. The biggest change after lapband surgery are your diet changes. With a lapband the band is placed around the upper third portion of the stomach to create a pouch in your stomach that initially holds 2 ounces of food. Over time this expands to hold 4-6 ounces. My restricting the amount of food your stomach can hold, you can limit your intake thus losing weight in the process. You will feel full sooner but will not necessarily lose the cravings.

What can I expect in the first week after my surgery?

In the first few days following lapband surgery you must stick to a clear liquid diet. Failing to stick to this diet can cause the band to slip and may in some cases require a second procedure.

The other surprise for most is if you drink pop (soda), coffee, or tea you cannot have caffeine for the first 3-4 months after surgery. You don’t want to consume and liquids that might create extra gas during the healing process.

After the first 3-4 days, you will move on to a modified liquid diet for 5-6 weeks that will include protein shakes, soup, and other soft foods like jello.

In the second 5-6 week phase you will be able to move on to solid foods that are shredded to make it easier for your body to digest. Your dietician will typically have you stay away from starchy foods like bread. Your diet will mainly consist of processed meats and vegetables. Just remember, you are on the way to a healthier life.

How Much Exercise Will I Need After Surgery?

After your surgery, you will slowly build up to a consistent exercise routine. At first you will want to start with low impact exercises like walking. Your physician will educate you after your initial visits on whether you are ready for more intense exercise routines.

The key is to start making your new diet and exercise a habit. You will find success if you create new habits that break your old habits and look at the surgery as a new lease on life. It won’t be easy, but worth every minute of sweat you put into it.

Before your surgery, make sure you physician takes you through the appropriate physiological and mental evaluations to make sure you are a good candidate. Finding a specialist that is thorough and experienced will improve your success and your weight loss journey.

Obesity is a real medical condition that affects about a third of the population of U.S. adults. Obesity is very serious; a chronic disease that may increase your risk of developing other serious conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and even some cancers.

Another impact obesity has on your life –an impact that is often overlooked– is a psychological impact. People suffering from obesity often deal with social anxiety, feelings of helplessness, and even depression. For this reason many people are turning to weight loss surgery, or lap band surgery, for a solution. Lap band surgery helps obese persons to lose weight and regain their health quickly and with less physical effort than regular dieting.

While lap band surgery has a direct and dramatic effect on the body, the psychological effects of the surgery almost outnumber the physical ones. And while most of these effects are positive, some are not. So if you’re planning to get lap band surgery, you should be prepared to make more changes than you ever thought possible – both good and bad.

Positive Psychological Effects

The positive psychological effects of lap band surgery are pretty well defined. Getting the surgery is a great way to make you feel better about yourself and your weight. Even making the choice to have the surgery has a positive effect on your psyche– those feelings of helplessness will be gone. Finally, there is something you can do to truly combat obesity.

In addition, you will also notice many positive changes in the way you look at yourself, your life, and those around you. When the surgery takes effect and the weight starts to come off, people will treat you differently. You’ll also have more energy as the weight comes off, and will need to find positive, productive outlets for that energy.

Negative Psychological Effects

Not all of the effects of lap band surgery are positive. In addition to the many physical changes you’ll have to make after the surgery, you’ll also notice some negative psychological effects as you try to deal with those changes. One major change will be the inability to eat as much as you want. And while this is a positive physical effect of the surgery, it may affect you mentally as well. One recent recipient of lap band surgery said:

“After the surgery it became apparent that food was my ‘drug of choice.’ It was suddenly gone, like going cold turkey. It took me about a month of depression (and complaining) to come to grips with the loss and take charge of my eating habits. Now I follow the doctor’s recommendations for everything I eat, and take the time to enjoy the energy I have. But it was hard.”

Another psychological impact you’ll notice is the effect of your increased energy. And while increased energy is, of course, a positive thing, chances are you won’t be used to it. It may take time to learn to deal positively and productively with increased amounts of energy– at first, it may feel like you’re bouncing off the walls.

Truth is, nobody enjoys changing their habits. Too much change causes stress, anxiety, even depression. Even making positive changes can have a negative impact on the psyche at first. It’s important to push through the hard moments and remember that every change you’re making is for you– and for the positive.

By: Amy Nutt

About the Author:

If you are considering bariatric surgery, you should be aware of all of your options. This term refers to a series of surgical procedures designed to treat obesity. People who are significantly overweight and have not been able to effectively treat this condition with diet and exercise may benefit from one of these options, but only a doctor can make this official diagnosis.

There are three main categories of bariatric surgical procedures, which include predominately malabsorptive procedures, predominately restrictive procedures, and mixed procedures, which include some characteristics of the two previous types. Predominately malabsorbative procedures are rare, but used to be the most common type. Due to the long term need for nutritional follow up care, and other health and safety factors, most physicians will not perform these procedures. As dramatic as the results achieved through bariatric surgery may be, it is important to remember that it is only a tool, and does not fix weight problems in and of itself.

Predominantly restrictive procedures are performed with the goal of reducing the size of the stomach and include adjustable gastric or lap band surgery, and gastric bypass surgery, in addition to mixed procedures.

Gastric Bypass surgery results in the creation of a pouch within the stomach, via a stapler device and connected to the small intestine. This creates a feeling of fullness quickly and results in a lower caloric intake. This surgery is also known as Laproscopy, which is a procedure in which a tube is inserted through a small incision into the abdomen. Carbon dioxide gas is pumped in to expand the abdomen and a small

camera is inserted so that the surgeon can easily view the area during the procedure.

Lap band surgery is generally recommended for patients who are morbidly obese, defined as having a BMI of 40 or greater. It is less invasive than gastric bypass and involves the placement of a gastric band around the upper part of the stomach, creating a small pouch that limits food intake. Like gastric bypass surgery, lap band surgery is also performed laproscopically. Patients have reported a faster recovery time, and faster results in some cases when dietary guidelines for post surgery are adhered to.

When researching bariatric surgery options, it is important to explore all avenues of opportunity available. The decision to have any type of surgery is not one to be taken lightly and should be entered into only with the advice and recommendations of a qualified physician.

By: Terry Parker

About the Author:

Weight loss surgery has come a long way, with procedures becoming less invasive and accompanied by fewer hospital stays and recovery times. Obesity has been described as an epidemic that can lead to a variety of medical disorders including high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiac events.

Despite the Lap-Band surgery being the most frequently performed surgery throughout the globe, in the United States, the gastric bypass surgery is most often performed. There are many differences between the two weight loss procedures, mainly the approach taken to the procedure.

How is a Lap-Band surgery performed? The procedure is less invasive, compared to the gastric bypass surgery, as it lacks the stapling and cutting that are involved throughout the gastric bypass surgery process. During the surgery process, a band is placed around the upper section of the stomach, thereby creating a smaller area, so the patient is able to consume a smaller amount of food while maintaining the satisfaction that comes with being full. The newly created smaller stomach pouch results in a smaller stomach with a recovery time that is less than a day for the majority of patients.

Gastric bypass surgery comes with an increased mortality rate, ten times that of Lap-Band surgery. As well as the increased mortality rate, the procedure is accompanied by a recovery time three times that of the Lap-Band procedure and invasive procedures that involve cutting and stapling the stomach pouch. During the surgery, the stomach is stapled to create a smaller stomach pouch and the intestines are fused, creating a new digestive tract which bypasses portions of the stomach and intestines. Weight loss results from the patient’s inability to eat large amounts of food with high caloric ingredients.

In addition to the increase in recovery time, it has been demonstrated that the two surgeries differ in methods used to lose weight. Although patients show an initial weight loss with both surgeries, the Lap-Band procedure has been recognized as a weight loss tool which can be adjusted as time passes and the stomach grows and stretches to accommodate larger meals.

Patients undergoing the Lap-Band procedure can expect weight loss of one to two pounds per week, compared the rapid weight loss that is initially demonstrated after the gastric-bypass procedure has been completed. With rapid weight loss, the body may begin to deteriorate, leading to malnutrition in the patient.

In comparison to gastric bypass surgery, the Lap-Band procedure helps the patient to experience fewer side effects. A common side effect that occurs from gastric bypass surgery is a condition is known as “dumping syndrome”. “Dumping syndrome” occurs when the patient experienced rapid digestion and food moves into the small intestine before being fully digested. The patient may experience cold sweats and cramps which are accompanied by a rapid heart rate. This experience has been compared to a state of shock. Choosing Lap-Band surgery reduces the chances of “dumping syndrome” occurring.

As a reversible procedure, the Lap-Band procedure is considered the safest and least invasive procedure, as the Lap-Band can be adjusted without removing the device from the stomach. After the Lap-Band has been removed from the body, the stomach is able to transition back to the state prior to the Lap-Band being installed.

To learn more about Lap-Band Weight Loss Surgery visit www.lapbandguide.com

By: Lisa Ventura

About the Author:

Weight loss surgery has advanced considerably in the past 50 years and modern forms of surgery such as gastric lap band surgery are certainly a lot safer and carry far fewer complications than early forms of open gastric bypass surgery. Nevertheless, there are risks and these should be fully discussed with your surgeon before embarking on surgery.

Gastric lap band surgery carries a number of risks which are specific to this form of surgery but it also carries the same risks that come will all major surgeries. In addition, there are a number of general risks which accompany any surgery involving patients who are overweight.

The first and most serious risk is that of death occurring either during surgery or shortly after and directly related to surgery. At this early stage (gastric lap band surgery has been around for some 12 years now but has only been licensed for use in the United States since 2001) very few deaths have been reported and it is difficult to give a figure, although it is generally held that the risk of death from gastric lap band surgery is less than 1%.

It is interesting to note that in one study in Australia no deaths at all were reported amongst a group of 2700 patients who have undergone laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding surgery since 1994. It should be said however that Australia has been in the forefront of pioneering the use of the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band and that over 90% of all weight loss surgeries conducted in Australia now use this method. This is significant as, in interpreting data from this study, it should be borne in mind that the experience of the surgeon is a very significant factor in terms of both risk and complication. Surgeons with considerable experience of this technique (having performed at least 100 procedures) show a very much higher success rate.

Many of the risks during surgery are general rather than “lap band” specific and are common surgical risks associated with such things as your age, weight, reaction to anesthesia and the presence of disease (whether or not this is directly related to your weight problem). The main “lap band” specific risk during surgery is that of gastric perforation (a tear in the wall of the stomach) which occurs in about 1% of cases.

The vast majority of complications will occur following gastric lap band surgery and most patients (in one US study the figure was as high as 88%) will experience some form of complication in the weeks and months following surgery. Such complications will not necessarily be serious and will range from mild to severe.

Approximately half of all patients will suffer varying degrees of nausea and vomiting and in the region of one-third of patients will also suffer from regurgitation (gastroesophageal reflux). About a quarter of patients will experience a slippage of the band and about one patient in seven will experience a blockage of the passage between the two sections of the stomach.

Other moderate to severe problems following gastric lap band surgery can include erosion of the band into the stomach and twisting or leakage of the access port. Difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia), constipation and diarrhea are also quite common.

In a very small number of patients (less than 1%) a whole series of non-series complications may arise including (but not limited to) inflammation of the stomach (gastritis), migration of the stomach above the diaphragm (hiatal hernia), inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), dehydration, abdominal pain, gas (flatulence), chest pain and infection.

In general gastric lap band surgery, particularly when performed laparoscopically, carries fewer risks and complications than other forms of weight loss surgery, but these risks are nonetheless significant and should be fully discussed with your surgeon and understood before any decision is taken to undergo surgery.

By: Donald Saunders

About the Author:

There are many surgical procedures that are available to help you lose weight and combat any obesity problems that you might be having. The stomach stapling procedure is definitely one that has been in the news a lot, but it is terribly invasive and can actually be dangerous to perform because of the massive amounts of tunneling in your stomach that is required for it to be effective. Taking stomach stapling out of the way, the other two major candidates for surgery include lap band surgery and gastric bypass surgery. These two surgical methods can be compared on multiple fronts.

Cost

Since everything in the world tends to revolve around money in some way, shape or form, it is important to compare these two surgical procedures in terms of their cost. Gastric bypass surgery is a very complicated procedure that requires specialized knowledge and instruments that are very delicate and perfectly crafted. With all of these things taken into account, the resulting cost for the surgery is very high. Lap band surgery on the other hand does not require knowledge as specialized to perform and the lap band instrumentation is a lot cheaper than the tools used in the gastric bypass surgery. This means that lap band surgery in the end is quite a bit cheaper than gastric bypass surgery.

Permanence

Gastric bypass surgery, for all intents and purposes, is a permanent thing. It is possible to change back whatever was done to you during such a surgery, but at the same time it is also important to realize that gastric bypass surgery is something that corrects a problem permanently. It is a permanent fix to a current problem. Lap band surgery on the other hand is really more of a treatment than it is a cure. Rather than changing things to make you feel better, its goal is to work with you to get better, at which point it can be removed. Gastric bypass surgery is therefore a lot more potentially life-changing in a negative way than lap band surgery would be.

Maintenance

For gastric bypass surgery, you have essentially signed your surrender against the current condition you are in. This means that in addition to this permanent change of surgery, you are also going to have to commit to a strict diet and a lot of exercise, as well as regular visits to the doctor to have your surgery monitored. With lap band surgery on the other hand, you can make any needed adjustments yourself and therefore allow yourself to go from an inactive and unhealthy lifestyle to one that is healthy and active at your own pace. Changes can be gradual and trips to the doctor are greatly reduced.

Conclusion

On the three major issues of cost, permanence and maintenance, it is quite clear that lap band surgery knocks the pants off its gastric bypass counterpart. It is simply a better procedure in so many ways that the only logical conclusion that can be reached is that a lap band procedure is much better.

By: Amy Nutt

About the Author:

As LAP-BAND surgery represents a relatively new procedure in comparison to gastric bypass which has been performed for more than 30 years, there are some misconceptions about the safety and success rates of this surgery. While the LAP-BAND procedure will not be right for all patients, the surgery can provide its patients a remarkable number of benefits. If you don’t know what to believe about the procedure or are unsure how the LAP-BAND compares to gastric bypass, here you will find candid responses to many of the most common myths regarding LAP-BAND surgery.

Myth #1 – LAP-BAND surgery is a dangerous procedure

While there are risks associated with any surgical procedure, LAP-BAND surgery has been shown to be a remarkably safe procedure with a very low rate of complications. In fact, patients undergoing gastric bypass surgery typically experience a higher rate of complications because the procedure is far more complicated and invasive. As gastric bypass requires the cutting and stapling of the intestines and stomach, treatment of such post-operative complications is also more difficult. Whereas the most common complications associated with LAP-BAND surgery can be treated quite simply, some of the gastric bypass procedure’s complications can result in lengthy hospital stays and even death. Not surprisingly, gastric bypass surgery has been proven to carry a mortality rate approximately 10 times greater than the LAP-BAND procedure

It should also be noted that because obesity and its associated health conditions pose such serious threats to the health of many Americans, the mortality risk of remaining obese is actually greater than any risk or complication attributed to LAP-BAND surgery. Of course, before LAP-BAND surgery, you will have a chance to meet with a weight-loss surgeon to determine if you are a good candidate for the surgery, what effect your health might have on the success of the procedure and what types of risks would be involved.

Myth #2 – Women cannot get pregnant after LAP-BAND surgery

For women, one of the biggest concerns about weight-loss surgery rests in the ability to get pregnant after surgery. While it is safe for LAP-BAND patients to get pregnant, many weight-loss surgeons advise their patients to wait at least 1-2 years after surgery to have children. As patients experience the majority of their weight loss during this period, waiting to get pregnant until body weight has stabilized is believed to be a healthier choice for prospective mothers. Likewise, because the LAP-BAND is not a malabsorptive procedure, mothers do not need to worry about the comprised nutritional intake that accompanies other weight-loss surgeries. It should also be noted that while the LAP-BAND does not adversely affect a woman’s ability to get pregnant, only the LAP-BAND can be adjusted throughout pregnancy or deflated to assist expectant mothers. After pregnancy, the LAP-BAND can be re-inflated to help women with postpartum weight loss. Most importantly, the LAP-BAND does not need to be removed before getting pregnant or giving birth.

Myth #3 – LAP-BAND patients experience a lower quality of life than gastric bypass patients

Numerous studies have already demonstrated that LAP-BAND patients can enjoy the same quality of life as gastric bypass patients and may even experience fewer side effects during periods of considerable weight loss. Much like gastric bypass, the goal of LAP-BAND surgery is to improve each patient’s quality of life by reducing overall body weight, treating associated health conditions and improving body image. However, by allowing for more balanced weight loss, LAP-BAND patients often have an easier time transitioning into post-surgery life and making long-term lifestyle changes. Such long-term success is a guided by LAP-BAND’s adjustability, as patients are more likely to feel content and satiated in comparison to gastric bypass recipients. Additionally, LAP-BAND prevents the incredibly uncomfortable condition known as dumping syndrome, a common side effect of gastric bypass surgery.

Myth #4 – LAP-BAND surgery cannot effectively resolve obesity-related health conditions

Both gastric bypass and LAP-BAND are effective tools in treating obesity-related health conditions. As the improvement or resolution of conditions such asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea is contingent on successful weight loss, patients of both surgeries have experienced positive results. However, a number of recent studies show that the LAP-BAND procedure can be very effective in resolving obesity-related health conditions. For instance, LAP-BAND has been shown to improve asthma conditions in 60% of patients, while 35% of patients experienced complete resolution of the illness. Likewise, 65% of patients with diabetes have seen resolution of their condition after LAP-BAND surgery, while 95% of patients successfully resolved their sleep apnea.

Myth #5 – LAP-BAND surgery cannot be performed on the super obese

Though many believe that the super obese (BMI over 50) require the rapid weight loss provided by gastric bypass, LAP-BAND has been shown to be incredibly effective in treating such patients with a lower rate of complications. While super obese patients might lose weight at a slower rate during the first year after LAP-BAND surgery, long-term weight-loss results are remarkably similar to patients with lower initial BMIs. In addition to long-term weight loss, such patients can also expect to experience an improved quality of life and reduction or resolution of obesity-related health concerns. Lastly, as such patients are often at increased risk when undergoing invasive surgery, LAP-BAND represents a safer method than gastric bypass for individuals beginning the journey towards a healthy lifestyle and long-term weight loss.

Myth #6 – LAP-BAND surgery is not an option for sweet-eaters

Contrary to popular belief, LAP-BAND surgery is an excellent long-term weight loss treatment for sweet-eaters. In fact, numerous studies have shown that sweet-eaters are able to achieve long-term weight loss with LAP-BAND as well as any other patients. Therefore, by following a routine of diet and exercise after surgery, any LAP-BAND patient – even a longtime sweet-eater – can achieve long-term weight loss and an improved quality of life.

If you are still unsure if the LAP-BAND procedure is a good option for you, simply make an appointment for a consultation with a weight-loss surgeon. An experienced bariatric surgeon will be able to determine if you are a good candidate for weight-loss surgery and help guide you toward the right procedure and a healthier way of life.

By: Carole S.
If you are considering lap band surgery, you undoubtedly have questions about lap band insurance. Depending on your insurance carrier, your surgical procedure may be covered, at least partially. If not, there are some other options to explore.

Some patients opt for installment plans arranged via an in-house financing program, while others opt for financing through credit from finance companies that have partnered with their surgeons. Monthly payments with these options vary depending on the length of time needed to repair the loan, the cost of the procedure, and your credit rating.

If medical financing through your surgeon is not an option for you, you can always consider contacting a medical finance company on your own. These companies typically provide lists of doctors and surgeons who participate in their network. It is important to research any surgeons that you are considering, since inclusion on the list is not an endorsement of qualifications.

Before you explore your options, review your health insurance plan to determine if any procedures are covered, whether your procedure can be reimbursed under the terms of your health plan, and what the terms are, if any of the financing offered through your surgeon.

You should plan on contacting your insurance provider as soon as possible to find out more about your coverage and options, since the approval process can be long and complicated. If you are denied coverage by your insurance company, you also have the option of contacting an obesity law and advocacy center.

The approvals process usually involves a referral from your primary care physician establishing what is known as a Medical Necessity for weight loss surgery, and full support from your primary care physician is crucial. You will also be expected to include a documentation of your weight loss history, including receipts and records, such as weight loss programs, weight loss books, exercise equipment, and anything else that highlights your weight loss efforts.

Deciding to have lap band surgery is a decision that should not be taken lightly. You should seek out the opinions of your doctor and other medical health professionals in order to determine whether or not you are a good candidate for this type of procedure before you begin to explore finance options. The good news is that if you decide to go through with the procedure, there are many different financing options for you, regardless of the type of insurance plan you have.

By: Jerry Glynn

About the Author:

Vance’s Bariatric surgery in India.

I am Vance panson I am from New Zealand; I came for Bariatric surgery in India through Forur Healthcare Consultants. Before coming to India I did an extensive research as I was seeking the best treatment at pocket friendly price. I came across Forur Healthcare Consultants and decided to go with them because of the charge they were quoting which was much less than what I was offered by other companies for my Bariatric surgery in India. And when I read the testimonials from the patients of Forur healthcare about the quality of treatment they got and the appealing price for the treatment; then without a second though in my mind I decided to go with Forur Healthcare consultants for my Bariatric Surgery in India

From the moment I arrived in India, the treatment that we received from Forur Healthcare team has been outstanding we were met at the airport by the associate of Forur healthcare Consultants who was a member of the public relations team. He welcomed us and was very pleasant; we were then driven straight to the hospital where we were very quickly and efficiently checked in to our room.

There were no language barriers as everyone speaks perfect English.

The accommodation we stayed in was better than excellent, we were placed in a private room where we had internet access, T.V and DVD and our own Refrigerator stocked with fresh fruits, bottled water and fruit juices, we also had tea and coffee making facilities and a private shower room.

The hygiene level in the room was excellent with the room being cleaned every day and clean sheets and towels daily. We have found everyone from doctors and nurses to cleaning staff always helpful and smiling and nothing has been a bother. One of the associates of Forur Healthcare took us shopping and to a nice restaurant on the first night and showed us some of the sights in Mumbai which was lovely. The food served has also been very good with daily menus provided and help from a dietician.

Right from the start my procedure has been fully explained in detail and surgeon who operated gave excellent advice and explained everything before I could even ask.

The aftercare has been outstanding with medication readily available when needed. The total experience that we have had from Forur Healthcare had been outstanding and I would have no hesitation in advising anyone else to do it.

I am so pleased with the end result of my Bariatric surgery in India.

By: health4u

About the Author:

Fresco Decoy of USA shares her story of Lap Band surgery in India.

I have been overweight since my early teens. Through the years I have been on every diet around including Weight Watchers, calorie counting, carbohydrate counting, Atkins. I have also been on diet pills which made me high strung and a little crazy. No matter what I did, I would initially lose weight but always gain it back plus a few pounds.

I started researching weight loss surgery in Aug 2006 and fortunately came across a web site of Forur Healthcare Consultants for the Lapland surgery. I had a conversation with them about my concerns and even they supported my decision for the Lap Band over gastric bypass surgery.

This was of great concern to me since I had heard stories of other physicians trying to convince patients to go for the gastric bypass. I flew down to India where I quickly completed my pre-op testing (nutrition consult and psych evaluation) and was scheduled for surgery. Surgery went very well and I did not experience any complications. Through all the ups and downs, both emotional (as I adjusted to my new eating patterns) and physical, deciding to have the Lap Band surgery was the best decision I could ever have made for myself.

Thanks to Forur Healthcare and my decision to have the Lap band surgery, I finally look forward to shopping, swimming, doing things with my family and just enjoying life.

Fresco Decoy

USA

By: health crazy

About the Author:

Jane Doro from Norway shares her story of Gastric Bypass Surgery in India

Prior to having Gastric Bypass Surgery I weighed 356 lbs., suffered from Type II diabetes, sleep apnea, hypertension and joint pain. This should have been enough to alert me to the death cycle I was on: but it was not. I fooled myself into thinking that I was relatively healthy and young enough to overcome my medical problems.

Shortly after my 29th birthday, my 5-year old daughter asked me if I would live to see her children. I asked her “what do you mean?” She said, “Mom, if you don’t lose weight you’re not going to be around when I get married and have children.” It took these comments from my little daughter to make me realize that my life was slipping away and I had to do something about my weight or forego the joys of parenthood and, hopefully, grand parenting.

After my chat with my daughter, I looked in earnest for a reputable doctor to consult for Gastric Bypass Surgery. But the cost of getting private surgery in Norway was totally out of my budget. I searched for my options in other countries and finally short listed on the Forur Healthcare Consultants in India. I was fortunate to find Forur Healthcare in India, who thoroughly helped me at every step to plan my surgery in India.

On March 13th, 2006, Gastric Bypass Surgery was successfully performed: I have not looked back. The recovery was not easy, but it was as explained to me by the surgeon and definitely it was worth it. I went from size 58 suits to a size 42; I now weigh 190 lbs and enjoy life’s little pleasures with my daughter, who is now 10.

I no longer suffer from diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and joint pain. All of my illnesses have disappeared, and I can now say that I truly enjoy a healthy life and a healthy lifestyle.

By: health crazy

About the Author:
