Lap band surgery is a laparoscopic surgery that has taken the medical community by storm. The reason is because it is a minimally invasive surgery that is done laparoscopically with no hospital stays. In fact, doctors usually send patients home in about 45 minutes and patients can resume their normal activities in one to two days. This has become the latest tool in the fight against obesity and has knocked gastric bypass surgery off of the podium because lap band surgery is helping individuals take it off and keep it off without having to do such tasks as rerouting the small intestines and stapling the stomach. What is even neater about the lap band is the fact that it is adjustable and it is reversible. That is something that is not achieved with gastric bypass surgery.

Adjusting the lap band

One thing that is on the mind of patients who receive lap band surgery and that is if their weight loss is permanent. The good news is that it can be. Throughout the weight loss process, the lap band is adjusted. It is adjusted until a certain level of comfort is reached and this is the point that will set the standard for how much weight is lost.

How the band is adjusted depends on how your stomach feels at night. If you feel like you are starving, then chances are you may need an adjustment. If you find that you are vomiting, you may not need an adjustment. You might just be eating too much food, taking bites that are too big, eating too fast, or not chewing your food well enough. These are some things to consider before thinking you need an adjustment. Also, don’t eat if you’re anxious or upset because this can also make you sick. It is also important to try to avoid microwaved food that becomes rubbery because it is difficult to swallow and many of the nutrients you need are not there.

As for how the band is adjusted, there is a port that is accessed with a needle. This can be done right in the doctor’s office. Then again, some doctors choose to do it in the x-ray department of the hospital so that they can use x-ray guidance, but this is a more expensive alternative that some doctors do not go for. The procedure is relatively painless and what the needle does is add or remove saline to make the band tighter or make it looser. It depends on what makes you comfortable and it may take several tries to achieve that level of comfort.

Permanent weight loss

Once the weight loss goal is achieved, the lap band can remain in place to avoid gaining the weight back. This is after it has been adjusted to a point that is comfortable for you and is keeping the weight off. Some believe that they have to have the lap band removed once they reach their weight loss goal. This is certainly not the case. It can be removed, but it can remain in place because, once that small stomach pouch is gone, there is room for more food and it will take a lot more to become satisfied. With the lap band remaining in place, weight comes off, stays off, and you still won’t need large portions of food to feel satisfied. That makes the lap band a viable weight loss solution that can keep you healthy and happy for many years to come. That way you do not have to worry about your weight ever again.

By: Amy Nutt

About the Author:

If you are considering the lap band procedure, a type of gastric bypass surgery, you are likely trying to find out everything that you can about the surgical process. Lap band surgery falls into the category of bariatric surgical procedures and there are three main categories of bariatric surgical procedures, which include predominately malabsorptive procedures, predominately restrictive procedures, and mixed procedures, which include some characteristics of the two previous types.

Predominately malabsorbative procedures are rare, but used to be the most common type. Due to the long term need for nutritional follow up care, and other health and safety factors, most physicians will not perform these procedures. As dramatic as the results achieved through bariatric surgery may be, it is important to remember that it is only a tool, and does not fix weight problems in and of itself.

Predominantly restrictive procedures are performed with the goal of reducing the size of the stomach and include adjustable gastric or lap band surgery, and gastric bypass surgery, in addition to mixed procedures.

Lap band surgery is generally recommended for patients who are morbidly obese, defined as having a BMI of 40 or greater. It is less invasive than gastric bypass and the lap band procedure involves the placement of a gastric band around the upper part of the stomach, creating a small pouch that limits food intake. Like gastric bypass surgery, lap band surgery is also performed laproscopically. Patients have reported a faster recovery time, and faster results in some cases when dietary guidelines for post surgery are adhered to.

Before your lapband surgery, it is recommended that you continue or begin an exercise program , make healthy food choices, and give up smoking and drinking all carbonated beverages, including alcohol. The amount of weight you lose depends on your adherence to the instructions set forth by your physician. While the transition may be difficult at first, it is important to keep your weight loss goals in mind.

Keep in mind that the lap band procedure involves dramatic lifestyle changes, as described above, and that the success of your surgery is dependent entirely on your willingness to adopt healthier habits and work towards adopting a healthier lifestyle overall. The lap band procedure involves a commitment on the part of the patient, but with hard work and dedication it is possible to achieve dramatic results and reshape not only your body but your mind as well.

By: Jerry Glynn

About the Author:

Many people every single day debate whether or not they should have lap band surgery. They may be a little overweight or a lot overweight and have found that the things they have tried have not worked for them. This is the case for many. Some diet until their blue in the face and they can’t seem to lose the weight. Others have a difficult time being physically active and they need that physical activity because dieting alone will not take off the weight. Having lap band surgery is a personal decision, but it is a personal decision that can make a huge difference in a person’s life.

For those who desire to live a more active lifestyle, they wonder if they can engage in strenuous physical activity after the surgery. After all, there is a foreign object wrapped around the stomach with an access port right under the skin. What if it comes loose? What if the access port moves out of place? These are questions that some lap band recipients may have. For those who do not have the answer, they may move around like a robot in fear that they’re going to knock something loose. Fortunately, that is not the case.

Physical activity

The great thing about the lap band is that it will not move out of place. The access port will also stay exactly where it is supposed to. Physical activity is a very important part of losing weight. Yes, you cannot hold as much food once you’ve had the lap band put in place, but smaller food portions alone will not take the weight off as fast as you’d like. Incorporating exercise will gain you the results that you want.

Sure, the smaller food portions are a great start, especially for those who are very obese and find it difficult to exercise. There are also those who may be disabled and unable to exercise. The smaller food portions alone will help them lose weight, but certainly not as fast as someone who can exercise. That isn’t their fault, though, so that is nothing to fret about.

For the individual who can exercise, it is important to do so. Not only for the weight loss, but for the other health benefits that is associated with it. First of all, exercise lowers the risk of heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. Exercise also helps you tone up your body as you’re losing the weight. You may notice as the weight comes off that you need some toning. Don’t think for a minute that the makers of the lap band were inventing something that kept an individual from enjoying their life to the fullest. It was taken into consideration that exercise would be needed for faster weight loss and to tone up the body as the weight came off.

Now what?

So now that you know the lap band will not hamper your ability to run on the treadmill, lift weights at the gym, chase after your kids, or run with the dog, is it for you? That is something only you can decide. Then again, you might be wondering what it is like to run on a treadmill, lift weights at the gym, chase after your kids, and run with the dog. If you are and you’ve tried to lose weight, then you may be the perfect candidate for lap band surgery. After all, you can lead an active lifestyle, which can be quite the treat if you’ve never been able to lead such a lifestyle before. You can discover a whole new world when obesity is not a part of it.

By: Amy Nutt

About the Author:
